Sunderland were held to a 1-1 draw against Oxford United as their season got off to a stuttering start at the Stadium of Light.

The Black Cats are one of the favourites for promotion after going so close in the previous campaign and a big home support arrived hoping to see Jack Ross' side pick up maximum points in the opener.

However, they fell behind to an effort Tarique Fosu and it was a frustrating first half for the hosts.

A Lynden Gooch penalty soon after the restart restored parity and it did look as though the Wearside outfit would kick-on but Karl Robinson's side ended the game quite comfortably and fully merited a point.

As you would expect, the result and the manner of the performance did not please the Sunderland support who made their feelings known on Twitter, with Ross coming in for strong criticism even at this early stage of the season.
