Sheffield Wednesday have made a steady start to their first full season under Jos Luhukay, with many supporters hoping that the Dutchman can lead the Owls back into promotion contention in the Sky Bet Championship.

Last year the Owls struggled, but the two years prior to that, Carlos Carvalhal had his squad in the top-six and challenging for a Premier League return.

Carvalhal built a hugely talented squad at Hillsborough, with his 2017 purchase of Jordan Rhodes supposed to be the signing that gave the Owls the edge over their rivals.

The Owls were well in the hunt for the play-offs in January 2017, with Carvalhal looking to take his side one step further than the previous season’s play-off final defeat.

At the time Rhodes was regarded as a top Championship striker, who had scored goals consistently for Blackburn Rovers and Middlesbrough, even helping the latter to the Premier League.

The striker didn’t prove to be the man to help Sheffield Wednesday win promotion in 2017, though, with his spell at Hillsborough proving to be really disappointing.

Rhodes, 28, is now on loan with Norwich City across the Championship, having scored just eight Championship goals in the blue and white of Sheffield Wednesday.

With hindsight, Rhodes’ move to South Yorkshire has been a poor one for all involved. However, at the time of the signing, Sheffield Wednesday’s supporters were delighted with their transfer coup.

In our latest FLW Rewind, we go back to early 2017 and look at some of the Sheffield Wednesday reaction to Rhodes’ signing…
