Doncaster Rovers have turned down three bids from Barnsley for Ben Whiteman with Blackburn Rovers also interested in the midfielder, according to the Telegraph's Mike McGrath.

Whiteman signed for Donny in January 2018, penning a permanent deal at the Keepmoat Stadium halfway through the 2017/18 campaign after impressing on loan from Sheffield United.

The 24-year-old has been a hugely important player for Rovers since making the move across Yorkshire from Bramall Lane, making a total of 136 appearances for the club.

Quiz: Can you remember the score from each of these 12 Blackburn Rovers matches from the 2019/20 season?

In 2019/20, the box-to-box midfielder scored five goals and chipped in with one assist for Doncaster, helping Darren Moore's side mount a push for the play-offs and finish ninth in Sky Bet League One.

Interest has been high in Whiteman ahead of next season, though, with Mike McGrath of the Telegraph revealing that Barnsley have already had three bids turned down for the midfielder this summer.

McGrath has also claimed that Blackburn are also monitoring the midfielder, and it remains to be seen whether Tony Mowbray's side make a move for the player or not.

Whiteman does only have one year left on his deal at the Keepmoat, though, so Donny may look to cash in this summer rather than potentially lose him for free next year.

The Verdict

Whiteman has been a top player in League One for a couple of seasons now, and it's definitely the right time in his career for him to move up to the Championship.

He has such a wise head on his shoulders for a 24-year-old and is able to play further forward or slightly deeper in central midfield if needs be.

His versatility would help him become a useful option in the Championship and he has all the attributes to help thrive at that level.

Having already rejected three bids for him, though, Doncaster will be reluctant to lose him and will do everything they can to try and retain his services this summer.
