Sky Bet League Two side Oldham Athletic are interested in signing Nottingham Forest midfielder Zach Clough this summer, according to reputable journalist Alan Nixon.

The 24-year-old has endured a tough couple of seasons at the City Ground, despite hugely impressing in his first season under Mark Warburton following his move from Bolton Wanderers.

The attacking midfielder scored 21 goals in 48 league games for the Trotters before signing for Forest, but he has since made just 31 appearances for the Reds, failing to make an appearance for them in nearly a year and a half.

A loan move to Rochdale materialised last season, but after scoring just one goal in a total of 13 games for the Lancashire club, another move looks likely this summer for Clough.

It is believed that Oldham Athletic are interested in signing the playmaker, who still has two years left on his contract at the City Ground.

The Latics have been active in the transfer window thus far under new manager Laurent Banide, making three signings including Alex Iacovitti from Forest.

It has been a whirwind few days for the East Midlands club too, with Sabri Lamouchi immediately replacing manager Martin O'Neill, who was sacked on Friday afternoon.

The Verdict

I think a move away from the City Ground would be best for both Clough and Forest this summer, and I think a move down to League Two could be beneficial for him.

On his day, he'd easily be one of the best players at that level, and it would be a massive coup for Oldham to sign him given how highly thought of he was only a couple of years ago.

He's still at a decent age, and I just can't see him being given a chance to shine in pre-season, so a permanent move away from the City Ground is definitely best.
