Millwall's assistant manager Adam Barrett has told the South London Press that the club are always looking to improve their squad amidst talk about the January transfer window.

The Lions tasted victory on Tuesday night thanks to a solitary goal from Benik Afobe as they saw off a somewhat toothless Reading side at the Den.

Afobe has only found the net on three occasions this season, whilst his fellow strikers in Matt Smith and Tom Bradshaw both just have two their names.

This has led to suggestions that the Lions could be in for a striker come the turn of the new year, with Barrett having his say on such talk recently:

"We're always looking to improve of course. We're in a really good position and we're delighted with where we are at the moment, but we can play better. I don't think we've really hit top form this season so far, we've done it in patches. But we're in a really good position, so we're pleased, and we're looking to improve all the time."

Millwall have only scored 16 goals in their opening 16 league games, which highlights just how many matches they have won by small margins.

The Lions will be looking to pick up yet another victory this weekend as they play host to Derby County.

The Verdict

It's true that Millwall need to start scoring more goals but at the same time they are also still picking up the results that they want at the moment.

They are perhaps best described as a work in progress and it is also fair to say that Gary Rowett has changed their style for the better since taking on the job.

Signing a new striker in January would be tough, but with the loan market potentially housing some hidden gems, they may well dip into it.

It will certainly be intriguing to see what type of business they do in the new year.
