Grimsby Town director John Fenty has confirmed Leeds United were interested in signing Omar Bogle, but passed up the opportunity at the 11th hour, reports the Grimsby Telegraph.

Bogle joined Wigan Athletic from Grimsby, for an undisclosed fee on transfer Deadline Day.

Leeds’ boss Garry Monk had reportedly been keen to bring in a striker during the transfer window to offer support for Chris Wood, who has scored 18 of the club’s 42 league goals this season.

Speaking with the Grimsby Telegraph, Fenty confirmed:

“There was another club, which I now don't mind revealing as Leeds United, who were tracking the interest in Omar and they had an opportunity, at the last minute on deadline day, to come in and pip what was being offered by Wigan.”

Leeds had been interested in bringing West Ham’s Ashley Fletcher to Elland Road, but the Hammers were reluctant to let the striker leave on the last day of the New Year sales.

Bogle had scored 19-goals for Grimsby this season before his move to Wigan, and the Latics are already reaping the rewards of their new striker’s goal scoring ability.

The 24-year-old netted twice last night in Wigan’s 2-2 draw with Norwich City.

Fenty also confirmed that Grimsby had added a sell-on clause into the deal with Wigan for the striker, along with additional clauses for survival, promotion and appearances.
