Nigel Clough is still confident of keeping Harry Maguire at Sheffield United

Sheffield United manager Nigel Clough remained confident of keeping sought-after defender Harry Maguire at the League One club last night.

Maguire, who has made 134 appearances for the Blades since making his debut against Cardiff City in April 2011, was quoted by Sky Sports saying it would be “a dream” to play in the Premier League and Europe amid interest from 2014 FA Cup runners-up Hull City, as well as Championship side Wolverhampton Wanderers.

But, speaking yesterday afternoon, Clough believes the 21-year-old will not leave Bramall Lane until his valuation has been met, and said the player’s attitude in training was not that of somebody agitating for a transfer.

“There is a certain valuation on him and until that is met he will stay with us,” the former Burton Albion and Derby County boss told BBC Radio Sheffield.

The 48-year-old added: “I don’t see why he won’t be here at the start of the season.

“His attitude in training has been brilliant. He has a smile on his face and certainly doesn’t look like an unhappy player.

“We think he is improving all the time and we hope that he stays with us.”

United have so far added Craig Alcock, James Wallace, Ben Davies, Chris Basham, Andy Butler, Marc McNulty and Jamal Campbell-Ryce to their ranks this summer, and begin 2014-15 at home to Bristol City on 9 August.
