Paul Clement is still hoping to add to his Reading squad this month, with a winger on his radar.

It’s been a testing start to the Championship season for the Royals, but have lost their two opening games of the season.

However, with the loan window remaining open until the end of the month, Clement is hoping he can strengthen his squad before August 31.

The Reading boss is happy with his defensive options, telling Football London that whilst nothing is certain yet, he wants to add a wide player to his playing squad: “We have got a couple of targets which we are working on but there's nothing for sure yet.

"I've got eight defenders - two in each position so I think a wide player will be the thing we are looking at.”

So far this season, Clement has kept faith with Mo Barrow on the left side of his midfield, after the winger’s impressive debut year at the Madejski Stadium.

Barrow rewarded Clement’s faith with an assist in the opening day defeat to Derby County, whilst Sone Aluko or Yakou Meite have been preferred on the opposite flank.

After a testing start to the Championship season has left Reading in the bottom-three, attention turns to the Carabao Cup, with the Royals back in action this evening.

Birmingham City are tonight’s opponents, with Clement’s side looking to progress to the second round.

The Verdict

It’s been a tough start to the season for Reading, but it’s perhaps harsh to judge Clement before the transfer window is fully closed.

The Royals are working on targets, and if they get the winger that Clement desires, they will look far more threatening go forward, depending who that addition is.

There have been positive signs so far this season, and getting more of the right people on board between now and end of the month should improve Reading’s results.
