Wolverhampton Wanderers won the Championship in the 2017-18 season with a huge total of 99 points.

Managed by Nuno Espirito Santo and with a team containing the likes of Conor Coady, Ruben Neves and Diogo Jota, Wolves eased to promotion and finished 11 points clear of third-placed Fulham.

It is a points total that few have managed to better, but current second tier leaders Burnley could be on course to reach a similar number if they can continue the outstanding form they have displayed for much of this campaign.

The Clarets currently sit 17 points clear of third-placed Middlesbrough on 65 points, with 17 games remaining.

We asked some of our FLW writers whether the title-winning Wolves side would be as successful in the current Championship.

In my opinion, the Wolves team of the 2017-18 season would have been promoted in pretty much any Championship season.

Rarely have we seen a manager like Nuno or a squad containing such quality in the second tier, with the future careers of some of those who plied their trade at Molineux during that campaign underlining the talent they had in their squad.

Arguably they may have been promoted by a bigger margin in the current Championship given how wide open the division has been this season, although whether they would have won the title is an intriguing question.

It would have been a closely-fought contest between them and Burnley and I would say that the Clarets are the best side we have seen in the second tier since Wolves.

But I think that Nuno's Wolves would just about have the edge.

A match between Burnley's flying side right now and Wolves' title-winning team of five years ago would certainly be an interesting contest, but ultimately I think that the Midlands club would win out.

Vincent Kompany's Clarets are very exciting to watch with their high pressing and intensity, but they do lack some experience in certain areas of the pitch.

You only have to look at some of the names that were in Wolves' starting 11 five years ago to see how good they really were - Ruben Neves, Diogo Jota, Helder Costa, Conor Coady, Matt Doherty, Willy Boly... the list of talented individuals is endless.

Even though the likes of Neves and Jota hadn't hit their peak at that point, you could tell they were clearly a cut above, and I just think that as a team Wolves had just a bit more about them than the Burnley team at this stage do.

Therefore, I see no reason why they wouldn't pip Burnley to the league title if they were both in the same league.

That Wolves side was as dominant a force as we’ve seen in the Championship in the last decade.

A points haul of 99 points shows that they would’ve absolutely given this Burnley side a run for their money.

Plenty of the players in Nuno Espirito Santo’s side maintained their place in the side in the top flight, with the likes of Ruben Neves, Diogo Jota, Romain Saiss, Conor Coady, Matt Doherty and Willy Boly all having Premier League quality.

It remains to be seen how this Burnley team will do in the top flight, assuming they clinch promotion as expected, but they are probably the best team the second tier has seen since Wolves.

It would’ve made for a fun match-up that Wolves might have perhaps just shaded.
