Hull City are expected to have a quiet January transfer window.

That's the view of Philip Buckingham, chief football writer at Hull Live who has blamed a lack of funds for what could be a quiet month in East Yorkshire.

The Tigers have made a decent start to the Championship season after picking up 22 points from their opening 16 fixtures.

This is a run which has put Hull in 12th place in the league, and just six points off the play-off places.

Like several other clubs, Grant McCann's side will have their sights set on challenging for a place in the top six and the January transfer window could be key to their hopes of kicking on in the second half of the season.

However writing in a live Q&A for Hull Live, Buckingham said that he's doubtful that Hull City will want to enter the market at such an erratic time.

He said: "My gut feeling is that there won’t be too much money to spend.

"That’s largely based on recent history where the money has been tight. City were in touching distance of the top six last January and still resisted the urge to invest in the squad.

"All we saw was a loan (Marc Pugh) and a free transfer (Liam Ridgewell) and ultimately that proved to be not enough. Have City learned from that? Are the Allam family taking things more seriously now?

"Those are the questions that can only be answered in January but it’s still a difficult month to get any sort of value for money. I’d think the priority in the window will be keeping this squad together.

"As for contract renewals, I’m not aware of any great changes. City say talks are ongoing behind the scenes."

The verdict

The January transfer window is a key time in the Championship season, particularly for a side pushing for the play-offs.

Hull City are one of a number of team who are hoping to mount a challenge for the top six, and if they're to do that they may need to strengthen in the New Year.

The Tigers haven't spent huge amounts in recent January transfer windows, and it appears that it may be a similar story this time around.
