Sunderland lost 2-1 to Leicester City U21s in the EFL Trophy last night, which has angered many fans of the North East club.

The Black Cats took an early lead at the Stadium of Light through Chris Maguire, who whipped a free kick into the top corner after 14 minutes.

The visitors pulled level from the penalty spot five minutes after half time. Conor McLaughlin tugged down Callum Wright as he was bursting into the box and George Hirst slotted the spot-kick into the bottom corner.

The Foxes added a second just three minutes later when Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall tiptoed through the Black Cats defence and smashed a shot past Jon McLaughlin.

Sunderland had an opportunity to equalise late on through Grant Leadbitter but the experienced midfielder squandered his chance at the back post.

The result means Phil Parkinson's side are third in Group A and need to beat Scunthorpe in order to qualify for the knockout stages.

The Sunderland boss made eight changes from the side that beat Southend United on Saturday but still named an XI full of senior stars that should've been able to get a result.

The result and performance drew significant criticism from fans of the North East club, with some suggesting it signified a new low point for the club.
