Charlton Athletic confirmed their place in the next round of the Papa John’s Trophy with a 2-1 win over Aston Villa U21s last night and Jayden Stockley’s performance has proven a talking point amongst fans of the south London club.

Stockley has been absent from Johnnie Jackson’s side in recent weeks as he was serving a three-match suspension after an incident involving Burton Albion defender Deji Oshilaja in November.

He was back available for last night’s game against Villa U21s and started up top alongside impressive 18-year-old Mason Burstow.

Stockley played a key part in both of the Addicks’ goals in the 2-1 win, recovering the ball in the build-up to Burstow’s stylish opener before winning and converting a penalty to regain the lead after Finley Thorndike had pulled the visitors level at The Valley.

After impressing on loan from Preston North End last season, the 28-year-old signed permanently for the south London club in the summer and is their top scorer this season with 11 goals in 21 games.
