It's safe to say that the 2013/14 season was one to remember for Brentford, as they clinched promotion into the Championship under the guidance of Mark Warburton.

The Bees finished second in the third-tier standings, and confirmed their promotion with games to spare, with third-placed Leyton Orient finishing eight points adrift of Brentford in the league table.

One player that played a key role in their promotion-winning season was Clayton Donaldson. The forward hit 18 goals in 48 appearances in all competitions for the Bees, as they moved into the second-tier.

However, Donaldson surprisingly declined a new contract offer from Brentford, and decided to move to Birmingham City in the Championship.

The 36-year-old scored 16 goals in his first season in the second tier, but struggled for consistent game time heading towards the conclusion of his time with the Blues.

Donaldson is currently playing his football in the fourth tier of English football with Bradford City, who are struggling in their bid to win promotion into League One.

Brentford are well-placed to challenge for promotion into the Premier League this season, with Thomas Frank's side currently sat fourth in the Championship table with just nine games remaining this term.

The Verdict:

He certainly played his part in their promotion-winning season.

Donaldson was a fantastic servant to Brentford, but I was surprised to see him not sign a new deal with the club after winning promotion into the Championship.

He went on to impress with Birmingham City though, and will be hoping that he can recapture his best run of form in front of goal with League Two side Bradford City heading towards the conclusion of this year's campaign.
