According to the Yorkshire Evening Post, Sheffield United are weighing up a move for Adam Clayton, with the Middlesbrough midfielder identified as Paul Coutts’ potential replacement at Bramall Lane.

The Blades have lost Coutts to a season-ending leg-break, which has left a gaping hole in midfield and coincided with a major slump in form in the Sky Bet Championship, which has seen Chris Wilder’s side fall from automatic promotion contenders, to battling to keep hold of their place in the top-six.

Clayton has been identified as a potential replacement, with Sheffield United weighing up a loan move for the Middlesbrough midfielder, who has found opportunities limited at the Riverside Stadium so far this season.

The 28-year-old has featured on just 14 occasions across all competitions for Boro this season, with Garry Monk reluctant to use the midfielder during his short time as manager at the Riverside.

However, Monk has now moved on from Boro, with Tony Pulis at the helm, where it will remain to be seen whether Clayton fits into the Welshman’s plans.

Clayton didn’t feature in the matchday squad on Boxing Day, as Pulis watched from the stands as Boro beat Bolton Wanderers 2-0.

The Verdict

This would be an excellent deal for the Blades, and if they can get Clayton to South Yorkshire, he would be a capable replacement for Coutts, who Wilder’s side are undoubtedly missing.

However, Monk’s sacking and Pulis’ appointment could play a big factor in any potential deal, as Clayton could be handed a lifeline at the Riverside Stadium under his new manager.

Either way, it would be worth the Blades asking the question.
