Sunderland ended their 48-year run to win a cup final at Wembley Stadium on Sunday, as they ran out 1-0 winners over Tranmere Rovers in the Papa John's Trophy final.

Lynden Gooch scored the only goal of the game, as he fired home clinically after being played through by a well-weighted pass from Aiden McGeady.

One player that played a starring role for the Black Cats in the win was Luke O'Nien, with the 26-year-old making his 30th appearance of the season in all competitions.

O'Nien has shown that he's a versatile member of the Sunderland squad, and has recently been playing in the heart of the Black Cats' defence, which is where started against Tranmere at the weekend.

He certainly made a positive impact, and kept the likes of Danny Lloyd and David Nugent quiet in the contest, as he picked up the man-of-the-match award for his efforts in the win over the League Two side.

O'Nien took to Twitter following the win, and admitted that it's what dreams are made of, whilst expressing his delight at bringing the trophy back to the Stadium of Light.

Plenty of the Stadium of Light faithful took to social media to issue their thoughts on O'Nien's performance on the day at Wembley.
