Thomas Christiansen has defended his goalkeeper Felix Wiedwald who has come in for severe criticism following recent performances.

The German stopper was very unconvincing as the Whites lost 3-0 to Sheffield Wednesday.

He seemed reluctant to come off his line and challenge Gary Hooper as he prodded the Owls into the lead and struggled to deal with shots and crosses all afternoon.

That wasn't the first time that the ex-Werder Bremen had looked shaky, with some fans suggesting that he should be dropped when Reading visit Elland Road on Saturday.

However, Christiansen was having none of that and came out in support of his keeper who is only eleven games into his career in England.

Everyone has to settle in. I'm still settling in! Felix is not the only one. We must remember his six clean sheets,” he said in his pre-match press conference, according to the Express.

Leeds had shown a real defensive solidity, with six clean sheets in a row from their second game, but they've now conceded eight goals in their last three games.

The Verdict

It's good of Thomas Christiansen to support his player, although with the window shut it's not as if they can go out and get a replacement now. Nevertheless, Wiedwald will surely appreciate those comments and will be determined to repay his manager.

Coming in from a different league is always tough and many high-profile keepers have struggled early on in England, so Wiedwald does deserve some time.

But, if the mistakes aren't cut out soon it can't be long until Christiansen considers his experienced back-up keeper, Andy Lonergan.
