It’s been a while since Leeds United found themselves top of the pile.

The win over Birmingham City last night and Cardiff’s capitulation at Preston North End, enabled the Whites to claim top spot in the Sky Bet Championship.

This is the first time Leeds have been top in the second tier of English football since the days of Howard Wilkinson.

Now that’s going back a bit!

Kevin Blackwell briefly achieved it in the 2004-05 season thanks to an early kick off.

Claiming top spot is well deserved as Leeds have easily been the outstanding performers in the league so far.

Only conceding in the first game of the season at Bolton and scoring 23 goals in seven games.

The players they’ve brought in have gelled very quickly and can only get better.

It remains to be seen if they can keep the top slot.

It gives boss Thomas Christiansen a different perspective as manager of Leeds United.

But I have no doubt he must have experienced this when he was manager of APOEL.

Being the top team in the Cypriot First Division for many seasons, they would have been the team to beat.

So, it will be interesting to see if Leeds can stay top but they have a manager who won’t be fazed by being in the spotlight.

Thomas Christiansen is an unknown no more and is proving to be one of the shrewdest moves Leeds United have made for a long time.
