Sheffield Wednesday have, understandably, been focused on off-field matters in the last 24 hours.

However, bubbling away under the surface is quite an exciting piece of transfer speculation.

According to Football Insider, Brighton goalkeeper, Christian Walton, is a player Monk could target in January.

What's the latest?

Walton, 24, has spent a good chunk of his career out on loan in the EFL. He's been with the likes of Luton, Southend, Wigan and Blackburn Rovers.

Last season, he was at Ewood Park and made 46 appearances under Tony Mowbray, making him ever-present in a Blackburn shirt over the course of 2019/20.

Now, he's back with parent-club Brighton, but finds himself down the pecking order under Graham Potter and is yet to feature in any competition this season.

Matt Ryan and Robert Sanchez have both had their chances for Brighton this season, with Walton down the pecking order.

Football Insider note the goalkeeper's ankle injury, before linking him with Wednesday, who are keen to recruit a new goalkeeper.

Is it likely to happen?

Garry Monk is yet to settle on a first-choice goalkeeper at Hillsborough. Cameron Dawson started the season looking like No.1, but mistakes have crept into his game and Joe Wildsmith is now playing. Additionally, there's Keiren Westwood outcast somewhere in the background at Hillsborough.

On the face of things, Monk has enough goalkeepers to keep him going, but the quality they bring is the key talking point.

Dawson and Wildsmith hardly convince the fans and that appears to have now stretched to Monk.

Understandably, with Wednesday fighting for their lives in the Championship, they need a reliable No.1 who fills a vulnerable defence with confidence.

Sheffield Wednesday quiz: Are these 10 facts about Hillsborough true or false?

Walton has proved he could be that man and, given his situation at Brighton, you'd imagine Wednesday have a chance of getting a deal over the line.

After news of Wednesday's point deduction being cut in half, extra emphasis is going to be on getting the squad in prime condition to pull away from the bottom-three.

There's little doubt that Walton strengthens the squad at Hillsborough.
