Chris Wood has opened up on his differences with the Leeds United fanbase, whilst also putting them to one side and insisting that he hopes the club can return to the Premier League.

Leeds sold Wood to Burnley in August 2017, with the New Zealand international heading to Burnley in a multi-million pound deal.

He earned his Premier League move on the back of an outstanding season at Elland Road, where he joined an elite club of players to hit the 30-goal mark in a single season.

Yet, it wasn’t all easy going for Wood at Elland Road, with friction between the striker and the club’s fanbase on the back of his first campaign, where just 13 goals flowed and Leeds slumped to mid-table.

That’s been a topic of discussion for Wood recently, with the 28-year-old opening up on his relationship with the Leeds fans.

“At Leeds, I had a bit of a rough patch, it wasn't always smooth sailing, but in the end, it came good and it was a good time [in my career],” he told Goals on Sunday, as quoted by Leeds Live.

“Passionate is definitely a word for it [Leeds fans]. When they are behind you and they love you they are one of the best fans in the country. But if they don't take to you or have a bit of a hold against you they will let you know about it and they let you know it very loudly and very vocally.

"But that's because they have such a big fan base and they have high expectations of what the club should be and hopefully they will get back [to the Premier League] one day.”

Wood has since established himself as a Premier League regular with Burnley, whilst Leeds, on the back of a mid-table finish after Wood left, have launched two assaults on automatic promotion.

The Verdict

Wood struggled to adapt to Leeds’ demands initially, but by the time he left Elland Road for Burnley, he was a top striker.

That spell with Leeds looks to have done him the world of good and it has probably helped him adapt that little bit better at Burnley.

You can tell by Wood’s words that he looks back on Leeds as having that sort of impact on his career, with no real grudge there.
