Former Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder is believed to be interested in the possibility of taking over at Nottingham Forest, according to the Mirror.

Pressure has started to build on the Reds' current boss Chris Hughton following a dismal start to the 2021/22 campaign.

Forest are bottom of the Championship standings and have yet to win a league game this season.

Having suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Cardiff City last weekend, the Reds will be desperate to provide their supporters with something to shout about in tonight's clash with Middlesbrough.

A failure to pick up their performance levels in the coming weeks may result in Forest parting ways with Hughton who has struggled to transform the club's fortunes since being appointed as Sabri Lamouchi's replacement last year.

The Reds' lack of consistency last season resulted in the club slumping to a 17th place finish in the Championship.

Forest's struggles have continued in recent weeks despite the fact that Hughton bolstered his squad during the summer transfer window by drafting in a host of fresh faces.

As per a report from the Daily Mirror, Wilder is now believed to be eyeing a move to Forest if the club's hierarchy opt to call time on Hughton's spell at the City Ground.

The 53-year-old was heavily linked with a switch to West Bromwich Albion earlier this year before the Championship side opted to hand over the reins at The Hawthorns to Valerien Ismael.

The Verdict

If Forest continue to falter in the second-tier, they ought to consider replacing Hughton with Wilder as he has an excellent pedigree at this level.

During his time in charge of the Blades, Wilder managed to guide the club to promotion to the Premier League in 2019 as they amassed 89 points from 46 league games.

Considering that Forest's long-term goal is to secure a return to the top-flight, drafting in the ex-Northampton Town boss could turn out to be a wise decision as he knows exactly what it takes to achieve success in the Championship.

For Hughton's sake, he will be hoping to keep his job by leading his side to positive results in their upcoming clashes with Middlesbrough and Huddersfield Town.
