Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder says that the club have proven that teams can be successful in the Championship without spending too much money.

The Blades' promotion to the Premier League was confirmed last weekend, when rivals Leeds United drew at home with Aston Villa.

It has been a remarkable season for Sheffield United, who finished tenth in the Championship last season, after winning the League One title in 2017.

Wilder has been able to guide the club to promotion to the top flight with a significantly smaller budget than some of the Blades' Championship rivals and believes the team have proven that teams can achieve success without spending too much.

“It’s amazing for everybody connected to the football club,” Wilder told talkSPORT.

“Where it was three years ago and to turn it around in the time we’ve done it, it’s remarkable. Everybody at the club – staff, players and supporters – I’m delighted for them.

“It just shows what can be achieved through hard work, good recruitment, work on the training ground, togetherness and team spirit – the old fashioned stuff that was about a few years ago but has been overtaken by a cheque book mentality.”

Sheffield United are second in the Championship table, three points behind leaders Norwich City, with a superior goal difference.

The Blades could clinch that title at the weekend if they win at mid-table Stoke City and Norwich lose to in-form Aston Villa.

The Verdict

Fair play to Wilder. Sheffield United have been magnificent in the Championship this season and Wilder deserves enormous credit for what he has been able to achieve with the team, on a fairly limited budget.

The Blades have proven that you can be successful in the Championship without spending too much and other clubs should try to follow their example.

Wilder will be hoping that his players can finish the season by clinching the Championship title at the weekend.
