Sheffield United’s Leon Clarke overcame a late injury scare to feature in last night’s 3-2 victory over Brentford at Griffin Park.

Chris Wilder had been left furious with the Blades’ performance in the 2-2 draw with Rotherham United on Saturday lunchtime, with the Bramall Lane chief opting to make significant changes to his starting line-up.

Clarke was included ahead of captain, Billy Sharp, whilst Conor Washington came in for a rare start, replacing David McGoldrick.

Their selection was justified, too, with Clarke on the scoresheet and Washington providing an assist in an impressive 3-2 victory in London.

Goalscorer Clarke almost missed out, though, with the veteran striker picking up a problem on the eve of the fixture.

Discussing his attacking duo with the Sheffield Star, Wilder said: “People say this and that about Leon. Well, they can say what they want because that lad showed what he's made of by putting his hand up to play. A lot of players might have cried off and made sure they were right for the next one. But he insisted he wanted to travel and come down.

"Conor gave us something a little bit different out there. He's waited patiently but we thought he was right for this game because of what he brings to the table. We picked a team to win the game. Round pegs in round holes."

Victory over Brentford set Saturday’s clash with Leeds United up nicely, with just two points separating the Yorkshire duo heading into the fixture.

Wilder will have to decide whether to bring Sharp back in, with the Blades’ club captain having 10 goals to his name this season. The former Elland Road forward also scored three goals against Leeds last season.

The Verdict

It was a surprise to see Wilder axe Sharp at Griffin Park, as he is usually a player that the manager will build his side around when they are in desperate need of a result.

However, one eye could already be on Saturday, with Leeds in town.

Sharp has a superb record against Leeds and could come in to partner Clarke or Washington.
