Sheffield United’s Paul Coutts is doing great as he edges his way back to full fitness, but Chris Wilder warned the midfielder that he still has to win his place back in the side.

Coutts is on the verge of a return, with the midfielder completing a full recovery after suffering a horrific leg-break against Burton Albion in late 2017.

That injury meant that the midfielder missed the second-half of last season, as well as the opening stage of the new campaign.

However, a string of appearances for the under-23s have helped Coutts work his way into the equation recently, with Wilder providing an update on the 30-year-old ahead of this weekend’s trip to Millwall.

Wilder told the Sheffield Star: “He’s doing great, but he’s got to get into the side. Got some good players who aren’t playing at the minute. Coutts had another 90 minutes and when the door opens for him, he'll be ready and raring to go.”

Coutts’ absence last season saw Sheffield United fall short in their quest for the play-offs, but they’ve made a strong start to the current season.

After nine fixtures, Wilder’s side sit fourth, knowing they have a golden opportunity against a struggling Millwall side this weekend.

Depending on results elsewhere over the weekend, a victory could see the Blades move to the top of the Championship table.

The Verdict

Oliver Norwood’s addition has helped the Blades in Coutts’ absence and he’s one man that Coutts will have to displace from the side if he is to make the starting XI.

From Wilder’s point of view, it’s superb to have so many options in such a key area.

Coutts’ absence hurt his side last year, but they’re more prepared this season.
