Sheffield United have certainly had a difficult initiation to life back in the Sky Bet Championship, with Chris Wilder’s side learning a lot about themselves during the opening weeks of the 2017/18 campaign.

So far this season the Blades have picked up three-points from their opening three fixtures, but following a victory over Brentford, Wilder’s side have suffered back-to-back defeats against Middlesbrough and Cardiff City.

Wilder’s side have been more than competitive so far, but their squad still looks short of both the experience and quality needed to guarantee a successful season in the Championship.

Here at FLW, we believe that Wilder needs to bring an experienced striker to Bramall Lane, along with another central defender to complement what he already has available to him.

The Blades have scored just one goal in the Championship so far this season, which came from the reliable Billy Sharp.

However, whilst Sharp has shown previously in his career he has what it takes to be a success in the Championship, there is too much reliance on the 31-year-old, and Wilder must look to add a more competitive option alongside him in the coming weeks.

Another area for concern is at centre-back, particularly after Richard Stearman picked up an injury in the defeat to Cardiff, which could prove to be a crushing blow for Wilder’s side.

Stearman’s arrival was perhaps United’s most impressive piece of business this summer, with the defender bringing bags of experience to Bramall Lane ahead of their Championship return.

Whilst Stearman’s injury might not prove to be serious, another defender to either play alongside the 29-year-old or compete for a starting berth with him, would not go amiss.

Wilder’s side have come unstuck in the early stages of the season, but shown enough quality to suggest they will survive their first year back in the second-tier.

However, we believe if they are to continue their progression, Wilder must look to bring a striker and a defender to Bramall Lane between now and the end of the summer.
