Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder has hailed John Lundstram for stepping up in the absence of key midfielder Paul Coutts.

Coutts broke his leg against Burton Albion in mid-November, the last time the Blades won, and it's no coincidence that their form has dipped without the influential 29-year old.

Given the poor run, a small section of supporters had been critical of Lundstram, the man tasked with replacing Coutts, but Wilder insisted the former Oxford man has done really well.

"I think John’s been excellent. It’s been ridiculous, the hype, over the Paul Coutts situation. This is a young kid, 24-years-old, playing his first batch of games in this division. I thought he was fantastic last time out, I really did," he told the Sheffield Star.

With fellow midfielder John Fleck banned for three games following his poor challenge on Korey Smith on Friday, Lundstram will have to take even more responsibility on the ball in the coming games.

"We all know he’s a quality player who us going to get even better for us. But I think that, showing the bravery to take possession in whatever situation, is a great characteristic to have."

The Verdict

The injury to Paul Coutts was a massive blow and Lundstram has struggled at times but some of the criticism has been unfair.

For instance, the Blades were terrific on Friday but hit the woodwork four times and Fleck had a moment of madness, that's nothing to do with Coutts or Lundstram.

The player will really appreciate the support from Wilder and everyone connected with the club will hope he repays the manager with strong performances over this critical festive period.
