Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder today confirmed he is chasing the signing of Southend United midfielder, Ryan Leonard.

The 25-year-old has impressed for the Shrimpers since joining the club in 2011, and could finally be set to earn a dream move to the Championship.

Wilder is a huge admirer of the Plymouth-born man, and confirmed that talks were ongoing over a potential January deal.

The Blades are in need of a boost following a poor run of form which has seen them fall away from the promotion places, which began with the season-ending injury to midfielder to Paul Coutts in the win at Burton last month.

Wilder also confirmed other targets were being monitored but only on loan deals, with Leonard likely to be the only permanent addition to the squad in the new year.

The Verdict

Leonard is a fantastic young player who has shone for Southend for many years, and you’d have to say that the player deserves a Championship move.

The Blades are in serious need of new additions, and a central midfielder is certainly something Wilder needs to add to his squad.

Wilder admitted that Leonard would be the only permanent signing of the window but hinted at loans, and the  manager must source the right men to put his side back on track.

January is a huge month for the club.
