Bristol City have recently announced that they have completed a deal to sign former Derby County striker Chris Martin on a two-year deal.

The Robins also hold the option to extend that deal by a further year if they wish to do so, as they target promotion into the Premier League this term.

They're now managed by Dean Holden, and the newly-appointed Bristol City boss will be eager to see Martin challenge the likes of Nahki Wells and Famara Diedhiou for their starting spot in the squad.

Martin had been playing his football for Derby last season, and made 40 appearances for Phillip Cocu's side as they missed out on a top-six finish in the Championship.

The Rams finished tenth in the second-tier standings, which resulted in Martin not signing a contract extension with the club.

He made 226 appearances in total for Derby, and remains a player that is held in high regard by the majority of the club's supporters.

Martin could be in line to make his first league appearance for Bristol City when they take on Coventry City on Saturday 12th September, whilst his former club take on Reading.

The Verdict:

He'll be fondly remembered for his contribution for the club.

Martin was a fans favourite with Derby County, and it's clearly a club that he holds in high regard despite moving to one of their promotion rivals.

It'll be interesting to see if Phillip Cocu looks to sign a new striker to replace Martin though, as I still think the Rams are short in their options in attacking areas.

If they can find an adequate replacement for Martin though, then I see no reason as to why they can't mount a serious challenge for a top-six finish in the Championship this season.
