Chris Hughton is planning a change of formation at Brighton and Hove Albion ahead of their Premier League debut, putting a ‘number ten’ at the top of his transfer targets, reports The Argus.

Brighton have used a 4-4-2 formation over the past two seasons, which has given them great success in the Sky Bet Championship, with Hughton reaching the play-offs before guiding the Seagulls to automatic promotion this year.

However, Hughton plans to tamper with his trusted formation at times in the Premier League, he said: “I would see myself at times playing it but also very much a 4-4-1-1.”

With a switch in formation will come a change in personnel, and Hughton continued to confirm where the club would be looking to recruit, he said: “Yes, a number ten.

“We’ve got players that can play in that role – Solly March, Skalak or Jamie Murphy – but we don’t have a specific number ten.”

Hughton has not made it clear who he will target to fill Brighton’s problem position, but showed an interest in Alex Pritchard last summer, before he opted for a move to Norwich City.

Chelsea’s Ruben Loftus-Cheek has previously been linked with a move to the Amex Stadium, and although the 21-year old is more of a box-to-box midfielder, he has impressed when playing in a more advanced role at Stamford Bridge.
