Chris Hughton is said to be waiting to see what emerges with the situation at Birmingham and Bristol City, and also what happens with Fulham boss Scott Parker at the end of the season.

Journalist Alan Nixon has reported that Hughton - last in work with Bright & Hove Albion last season - is waiting to see what unfolds at St Andrew's over the coming weeks.

The ex-Spurs man has been linked with most every Championship job that's become available this season. But with the Bristol City job becoming available last weekend, and the Birmingham job in midweek, it's thrust him into the managerial rumour mill once again.

To add to that, Hughton is said to have been keeping an eye on the Fulham job throughout the season:

Parker has had a contested season. Although his side have been challenging throughout, they've always been trailing to the top-two, and a growing section of fans have been calling for Parker's dismissal.

As for Birmingham, they look as though they've set their sights on Charlton boss Lee Bowyer - the ex-Blues midfielder hasn't ruled out the possibility of a return.

Bristol City meanwhile haven't really identified a main target. Hughton was one of the first names linked, along with ex-Stoke City boss Tony Pulis. This week has seen both Steven Gerrard and John Terry linked with the vacancy as well.

The verdict

We're in an unusual position in that, we should be in the middle of pre-season, but we've still got a handful of Championship games to play. It'll throw summer planning out the window slightly, hence why Hughton is playing the waiting game.

He looks set for a return to management though, and it'll be interesting to see how he might fare back in the Championship.
