Chris Hughton says he is hopeful that Miguel Angel Guerrero can be a "big asset" for Nottingham Forest going forward.

Guerrero joined Forest in the summer transfer window, arriving from Olympiacos who are owned by Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis.

The 30-year-old has struggled to make an impression since making the move to the City Ground, though, and finds himself at the bottom of the pecking order up top.

Whilst Lewis Grabban and Lyle Taylor have been battling for a place in the side, Guerrero has found game time hard to come by, making the matchday squad only once this season.

He has made only one appearance for the Reds thus far, coming on for the final 15 minutes of their 2-0 home defeat to Cardiff City last month.

Hughton, though, who also admitted that the 4-4-2 setup could be a "good system" for the Reds, has delivered his verdict on Guerrero, insisting that the striker is very much in his plans going forward.

Via Nottinghamshire Live, Hughton said: "He’s a player I knew before but didn’t know so well. I’m hoping he’s going to be a big asset and a good asset for the club.

“He can play as a number nine or as a second striker. It gives me good options.

"I’m still trying to tie down the best qualities he’s got, but he’s certainly shown me enough to demonstrate why he’s here."

The Verdict

This is surprising to hear, but it's also nice to see that Hughton isn't leaving Guerrero out in the cold.

Not many would have expected him to play a big role this season, especially with Lyle Taylor coming in to provide competition for Grabban in the summer, but a change in system might actually help Guerrero.

If they switch to a 4-4-2 system, then that would give Guerrero a better chance of playing and starting up top alongside either Grabban or Taylor.
