Sunderland remain bottom of the Championship although they did put in a positive performance as they got a draw against Millwall at The Den on Saturday.

The Black Cats took the lead through a brilliant Bryan Oviedo strike but were pegged back in the second half.

However, they showed resilience and determination whilst keeper Jason Steele was there when called upon late on.

The ex-Blackburn keeper found himself back in the team following Lee Camp’s poor form since joining, along with Robbin Ruitier’s injury and Chris Coleman was happy with his performance.

I was pleased with how he did. It’s not easy to play for Sunderland, especially if you’re a goalkeeper because you’re the last man and one little mistake and you’re in trouble,” he  was quoted by the Sunderland Echo.

The former Wales boss also praised his attitude since a proposed deadline day move to Derby collapsed late on.

“He showed a really good attitude since it didn’t work out for him in the transfer window and he came back. He could have gone the other way since his move to Derby fell through, but, if anything, he upped his game and worked really hard in training.”

The Verdict

Sunderland’s goalkeeping situation this season has been shambolic with all three players making basic mistakes at one stage or another.

Clearly, Camp wasn’t the answer after arriving in January and Coleman had to make a change for the game on Saturday.

Thankfully for them, Steele did quite well and it’s now his shirt to lose, although he will need to improve from his early season form.
