Chris Coleman believes that Ashley Fletcher has both the ability and desire to do well at Sunderland after signing on loan for the remainder of the season.

The former Manchester United youngster arrived from north east rivals Middlesbrough last night and gives Coleman a much-needed extra option up front.

After Lewis Grabban and James Vaughan departed earlier in the window it left the Black Cats with teenage duo Josh Maja and Joel Asoro as the only natural strikers at the club.

Therefore, the signing of Fletcher was crucial and the former Wales boss told the Sunderland Echo why he is confident the 22-year old will be a big asset for his side.

Ash has experience at this level and in the Football League. He’s played for big clubs and in big games. He’s a physical presence and a handful for defenders. More importantly he wants to come here, progress and fight with us.”

Fletcher only joined Boro in the summer after a big-money move from West Ham but fell out of favour under Tony Pulis who was appointed in late December.

The Verdict

This was a massive signing for Sunderland as their striker search had become embarrassing but they’ve managed to land a good player.

As Coleman says, Fletcher brings a physical presence and has pace so is going to be a big threat for the team and he is clearly impressed with his attitude.

It will also benefit the player significantly as playing regularly for Sunderland is much better for his development than sitting in the stands at Boro.
