Sunderland have endured a torrid season and face a real battle just to preserve their Championship status.

Chris Coleman has a massive job on his hands to keep the Wearside outfit up and wasn’t helped by a poor January window that passed by without enough additions.

The financial situation at the club meant the former Wales boss was restricted to young loan signings or free transfers last month.

Owner Ellis Short is actively looking to sell the club and that has created major issues for the team.

With nothing in the pipeline it is a difficult time to be a Sunderland fan and Coleman will also have to act accordingly.

Whilst it may have been forced upon him, building a side full of young and hungry players may be the way to go.

Therefore, whether Sunderland survive or not, he will be looking to shake up the squad in the summer and here are two players who should be leaving the Stadium of Light.

The 29-year old has spent nine years at Sunderland but he is really struggling now. At his best, Cattermole was a leader, competitive and really tough to play against but that’s not been the case this season.

He will still have a role to play in helping the club survive now as Coleman is desperately short on numbers in the midfield area however in the summer it will be time to go.

The ex-Boro man is commanding a big wage in comparison to the rest of the squad and isn’t justifying that at all on the pitch.

A change could benefit Cattermole and it will certainly benefit Sunderland.

This is more hope than expectation as Sunderland are desperate to shift Rodwell and his insane wages off their books.

The former Manchester City man is believed to collect £70,000 a week as he didn’t sign a clause that would see his wages drop once Sunderland were relegated from the Premier League.

It’s incredible that he was given such money and clearly nobody will touch him on that salary. A compromise may have to be reached and Rodwell will have to show some desire to leave which he didn’t do in January.

Whether it’s paying him off or a new club only paying a percentage of his wage, Sunderland will try once again to shift a player who symbolises everything that went wrong with the club.
