The situation looks bleak for Sunderland towards the foot of the Championship table, but just three points from safety, manager Chris Coleman will remain resolute in his side’s fight for survival.

The Black Cats face a difficult test against play-off chasing Brentford this weekend, with Dean Smith’s men relying on a positive result at The Stadium of Light to keep their top six hopes alive.

Coleman has been dogged by player injuries since his appointment as head coach earlier in the season, with a number of first-team regulars sidelined during his tenure at the club.

The former Wales boss provided an update on the club’s injury situation ahead of the Brentford clash, revealing that Callum McManaman was close to a return to action.

“Callum McManaman trained today, he looked good, looked bright,” Coleman told the club’s official website. “(Lynden) Gooch has been with us but had a game (for the reserves) because he hasn’t been with us for a while.

“Lamine Kone trained today, he is 75% okay. We’ll see how they come back and then we’ll know for sure who’s ready and who’s not.”

The Verdict

A positive update for Sunderland fans amidst a turbulent period for the club, many first-team stars are expected back in action in the coming weeks.

Having Gooch back in the squad will be a huge boost for Coleman, although he appears to be sweating on the fitness of Kone ahead of the weekend’s match up.

McManaman is a solid player at this level and his return will come as a relief, with the player looking likely to be on the bench when the Bees come to town.
