Sunderland lost 1-0 away from home against QPR in their last match.

George Honeyman has been a bright spark in an otherwise hugely disappointing season for Sunderland, and he was recalled for the game against the Rs.

The Black Cats currently find themselves at the bottom of the table with nine games left and are in serious danger of consecutive relegations.

Although they are only four points away from Barnsley in 21st place.

Honeyman has the most appearances of anyone in the squad with 34 as well as contributing three goals and two assists. He has been a key player in the team even though he is one of the youngest consistent starters at 23-years-old.

Chris Coleman had this to say about the player to the official Sunderland site:

I’ve been in professional football for 30 years as a player and a manager and in terms of mentality, I’ve not seen anything better than him.

He’s a huge, huge personality, desperate to play football, desperate to play for Sunderland.

It’s all about the game, all about playing for Sunderland."

The Verdict

This has been a breakout season for the youngster, but it's a shame it came in such a bad time for the club as a whole. They are in serious danger because clubs that move down multiple division within a few seasons often take a significant amount of time to recover.

A massive overhaul will be required in the summer regardless of where the club finishes. Hopefully they are able to keep hold of Honeyman because he could help form a strong spine in the team which has been missing in the last few seasons.
