Chris Coleman has hit out at players who aren’t interested in playing regular first team football after it was revealed that Sunderland wouldn’t be signing Chris Martin.

The Derby striker has been a key target for the Black Cats this window however the Scotland international will not be moving to the Stadium of Light.

Whilst Coleman didn’t name Martin it believed he was referring to the 29-year old, when he said Sunderland only wanted players who wanted to play for the club and were up for the fight.

You want to play football. If you're not playing at your club, you want to play somewhere otherwise you are training Monday to Friday and you have nothing to show for it at the weekend,” he told the Sunderland Echo.

It has been tough. You have to draw a line, though – you can't be waiting and begging players to come. We don't want players who think 'I'm here for three or four months, it doesn't really matter what happens to the club' – we are desperate to stay away from that type of mentality.”

The Verdict

Clearly Chris Coleman is frustrated that the Martin deal hasn’t gone through and even though he has a point in general, the Derby man is well with his rights to take his time ahead of a big move.

Sunderland’s position is not attractive to any experienced Championship players so if Martin has better options it’s worth considering.

Supporters will be hoping the club have more deals in the pipeline because they desperately need new players to help this struggling squad.
