Chris Coleman has told Sunderland midfielder Jack Rodwell that it is up to him to revive his career, according to a report by Sky Sports News.

Coleman recently succeeded Simon Grayson as the new Sunderland boss after leaving Wales and he has issued this message to Rodwell in a bid to get him back up to speed in the first team.

The thrice capped former England international has only played twice in the league this season amid injuries and poor form.

Coleman has now challenged the 26-year-old to fulfil his potential and get his career back on track after being tipped to be the next big thing during spells with Everton and Manchester City.

Coleman said: "We're all accountable here at this club, especially myself and the players.

"And, as an individual, he has to want to change himself.

"It really is down to the individual.

"Jack is super talented but he hasn't played enough.

"You can have a new manager, a new way of working but it's still Jack and whatever he needs to do to play more.

"That's what he has to do.

"I'm realistic he needs to play more football and I'll give him any help he wants on or off the pitch.

"But it still has to come from Jack."

The Verdict

Jack Rodwell clearly has plenty of ability hidden somewhere and he needs his confidence back.

He needs to show the desire and the application to get back to where he used to be.

Perhaps a run in a low performing Championship side is just what he needs to kick-start his career again and he could benefit Sunderland at the same time.
