Speaking to the Shields Gazette, Chris Coleman has hinted that Jason Steele will gain another opportunity to impress as Sunderland’s number one this season, admitting that both his goalkeeping options are more than capable.
Following relegation from the Premier League last season Sunderland lost Jordan Pickford, with Robbin Ruiter and Steele brought to the Stadium of Light to replace the impressive England goalkeeper.
Neither Ruiter nor Steele have nailed down a starting berth this season, with Ruiter featuring in 11 Sky Bet Championship fixtures, whilst his teammate has taken part in the other nine.
Both have been guilty of making mistakes during their spells in the starting XI, but Coleman has placed his faith in Ruiter during his three-match spell in-charge at the Stadium of Light.
However, the former Welsh manager has indicated that Steele could be in-line for a recall in the future, with another opportunity seemingly on the horizon for the 27-year-old.
Coleman said: “Steeley is a good goalkeeper too, he proved that at Blackburn. He has come in here, it is a different environment for him, and it is very tough to choose between them.
“I think they will both get games, if I’m honest. They are both capable.”
Ruiter conceded three goals in Saturday’s 3-1 defeat to Reading at the Stadium of Light, but did manage to keep his first clean sheet of the season the week before, helping Coleman’s side to a 2-0 victory over Burton Albion at the Pirelli Stadium.
As Simon Grayson was during the opening months of the season, Coleman is clearly undecided who the best goalkeeper at his disposal is, with neither Ruiter nor Steele proving to be a standout option this season.
It is certainly an area Coleman needs to address, as Sunderland’s only chance of success will come if they have a settled defensive unit.
Steele was brought to Sunderland as the club’s number one in the summer, and there is every chance he will be reintroduced sooner rather than later.
