Chris Coleman has admitted that Sunderland will need a major rebuild in the summer no matter what division they are in.

The Black Cats look set to suffer a second successive relegation in the coming weeks, with the north east side seven points from safety with just five games to play.

Despite that, the former Wales manager has expressed his desire to stay and will look to make major changes in the summer. Although, he did admit the uncertainty surrounding the ownership situation makes it tough to say exactly what changes will happen.

Come what may, even if we pull it off, we’ve got to rebuild. If we’re rebuilding from this league or the league below there are still changes that need to be made and it won’t really change a lot,” he told the Sunderland Echo.

The thing that’ll change how we rebuild is what happens above me and we’re all in the dark on that one. We’ve got to wait and see.”

Sunderland are back in action tomorrow when they host Norwich at the Stadium of Light.

The Verdict

Coleman has been very honest throughout his time at Sunderland and doesn’t mislead the fans with silly comments and they’ll appreciate that.

He is telling it as it is again here, as Sunderland need major changes no matter what happens and he also acknowledged how tough staying up would be.

Hopefully, the ownership situation changes and he is given the chance to create a competitive squad that can bounce back next season.
