Chris Coleman has hit out at his players after they fell to a 3-1 defeat against Birmingham in a crucial relegation clash last night.

The loss leaves the Black Cats second from bottom and allowed Birmingham to leapfrog them in the process, with Blues now in 20th place.

Goals from David Davis, Jeremie Boga and Sam Gallagher gave the hosts a comfortable lead before Bryan Oviedo pulled one back.

And, when speaking to the Sunderland Echo, the former Wales boss revealed he was livid in the way that his side played.

I’m gutted. You know you will lose games occasionally but it was the manner which was surprising, given where we are and who were playing against. The lack of intent in our play all over the pitch was a huge disappointment and very worrying.”

Coleman was also angry at the way his side defended, with Sunderland conceding three very soft goals and the boss admitted the absence of John O’Shea was a big blow.

I can only say it is unacceptable. We can’t even begin to accept those defensive errors. We missed John’s experience and positional play.”

The Verdict

You have to fear for Sunderland after the performance last night. They were second best throughout and managed to concede three goals to the lowest scorers in the league!

It further increases the importance on today, as several new signings need to come in right through the spine of the team but will they get the deals done?

Sunderland are in major trouble and you can tell that Coleman recognises that and it will be a miracle if he keeps the side that played last night up.
