Frank Lampard is interested in bringing his former Chelsea teammate Gary Cahill to Derby County if they secure Premier League promotion, according to the Mirror.

Cahill is departing Stamford Bridge this summer after spending seven successful years at the club, and he is now looking for a new club after featuring just eight times under Maurizio Sarri this season.

Rams' boss Lampard is reportedly interested in Cahill's services should Derby get promoted, whereas his wage demands are likely to be too high if the club slip to a play-off final defeat against Villa.

The 33-year-old would still need to take a considerable pay cut if he was to make the Pride Park switch, but Derby could be the only club to present him the opportunity to remain in the Premier League.

In our latest Six Point Opinion, we discuss the potential deal...

How likely is the move to happen?

"I can see this being a real possibility if Derby get promoted.

"Lampard has already used his Chelsea connections to sign Mason Mount and Fikayo Tomori this season, and there is nothing to stop him using his links to bring in Cahill next term.

"I also think Cahill would be keen on a switch to Pride Park, as he would surely jump at the chance to remain in the Premier League. The only question mark is over whether Derby can compromise on his wage demands."

Is he still capable of performing at the top level?

"Cahill made 27 league appearances under Conte during the 2017/18 season, but he has seen a considerable drop-off in game time during this campaign.

"This is because Sarri has barely given him a chance to stake his claim for a place. He has been extremely unlucky to not have featured more this season, with Sarri seeming to make his mind up on Cahill before he even saw him play.

"However, Cahill is still only 33 and he he certainly still has a couple of years left in him at the top level. He could be a real coup for a side lower in the table."

What qualities could he bring to Derby next season?

"Aside from being an all-round solid defender, he would bring bags of experience. Lampard's Derby side is extremely youthful, and they will need increased maturity to succeed in the Premier League.

"Cahill won a string of major honours at Chelsea and has played in the Premier League throughout his career. He is accustomed to the demands of the top-flight.

"If Derby do get promoted, some of Derby's young loan players could well extend their stays at Pride Park. Cahill's presence in the back-line would be an enormous benefit to them."

Where would he fit in Derby's side?

"Lampard usually opts for the centre-back pairing of Tomori and Richard Keogh, which means there would surely be room for Cahill next season.

"Tomori was voted Rams' Player of the Season, so the club will surely attempt to extend his services into next season, and Cahill would fit in perfectly alongside him in place of Keogh."

Will Chelsea miss his services?

"The fact he has played so few games this season suggests his presence will not be greatly missed by the Blues.

"However, Chelsea may rue his departure if Sarri leaves the club this summer, as another manager could have greatly benefitted from his services.

"Cahill is also a bubbly figure who will be missed by the Chelsea dressing room off the pitch. But Chelsea's loss would be Derby's gain."

Finally, would he be able to help keep Derby up?

"It is too soon to predict Derby's Premier League fate before they have been promoted, but I think signing Cahill would be an excellent start to their transfer window.

"A strong defensive unit is one of the most important considerations for a newly-promoted Premier League side, and Cahill's arrival would immediately solve this problem.

"Lampard will of course have other problems to deal with, such as maintaining the services of the likes of Harry Wilson and Mason Mount to ensure a sense of continuity. But it would still be a major step in the right direction to bring Cahill to the club."
