Chelsea weighing up shock swoop for impressive former player

Slavisa Jokanovic is reportedly on Chelsea’s shortlist to replace Antonio Conte.

According to the Daily Mail, the Fulham manager is among well-known names such as Luis Enrique and Maurizio Sarri to take over next season with Conte likely to leave after a disastrous title defence.

Jokanovic played for Chelsea between 2000 and 2002 near the end of his career. He is currently mounting a promotion push with Fulham who are in fourth place in the Championship.

They narrowly missed out on promotion last season, but Jokanovic has maintained their entertaining style, which they became known for last season, without it coming at the expense of results.

The manner with which the Cottagers approach games has earned him plaudits from fans and neutrals alike while also helping eliminate the negative long ball, physical reputation that had come to define the Championship.

Fulham are currently the in-form team in the Championship with a 14 game unbeaten run which has seen them beat the top teams in the Championship such as Wolves and Aston Villa.

Jokanovic has done brilliantly at Fulham, but failure to achieve promotion means that he could tempted by offers from Premier League clubs.

The Verdict

It’s hard to imagine that Chelsea would swoop down into the Championship for a new manager even if their short-term approach means they have an ever decreasing pool of managers to choose from.

Jokanovic is a talented manager, but it seems there are a few other steps he has to make, whether that be taking Fulham into the Premier League or moving to a bigger club, before one of the top clubs will hire him.
