Brentford face a battle to keep hold of talented attacking midfielder Said Benrahma in the January transfer window, with Chelsea the latest club to show an interest in the playmaker.

The Blues have been boosted by the news that their transfer ban has been lifted, meaning that they can buy players in the New Year.

And, the Daily Mail revealed that adding more creativity is a priority for Frank Lampard and they also claimed that Benrahma is a player who the Londoners are monitoring.

Even though the Algerian has only scored three times this season, he was one of only five players last season to hit double figures for both goals and assists.

However, it's not just Chelsea that the Bees have to worry about, with reports emerging in the past few weeks suggesting that Aston Villa will also move for Benrahma in January, with Dean Smith having previously worked with the player at Griffin Park.

The ex-Nice man played the full 90 minutes as Brentford lost 2-1 to Sheffield Wednesday today, leaving them two points away from the top six.

The verdict

You would have to say that a move to Chelsea would be a huge step up for Benrahma and perhaps not what he needs at this stage of his career as he wouldn't get regular minutes.

Nevertheless, anyone who has seen him play will instantly recognise that he has the ability to play in the top-flight so this interest isn't a major surprise.

But, Brentford are in a position where they can win promotion and they have to do all they can to resist any offers until the summer at least.
