Chelsea have registered their interest in signing Wigan youngster Joe Gelhardt according to a report from the Daily Star.
Gelhardt has caught the eye with a number of impressive performances so far this term, in what is his breakthrough season with the Latics.
The forward has made six appearances in all competitions for Paul Cook’s side, and it’s clear to see that he’s rated highly by the Wigan boss.
Gelhardt has recently signed a new deal with Wigan though, so it seems as though Chelsea and the other interested parties will have to match their asking price for the 17-year-old.
He’s still at a relatively young age though, and will surely be keen to prove himself in senior football, with first team opportunities unlikely to come at Stamford Bridge at this moment in time.
It will be an interesting January transfer window though, especially if any of the interested clubs are to make a formal offer to Wigan for Gelhardt’s services, with Manchester United and Liverpool being just some of the teams interested in landing his signature.
Gelhardt and his Wigan team-mates are next in action after the international break when they take on Stoke City in a game where they’ll be keen to add to the Potters’ woes so far in this year’s campaign.
They face a tough battle to land his signature.
Gelhardt has recently signed a new deal with Wigan, so it’s clear to see that he’s keen to remain with the Championship side for the foreseeable future.
But with bigger clubs reportedly interested in signing him, he’ll surely have had his head turned by Chelsea’s interest.
Frank Lampard has already shown that he’s willing to give young players a chance in the Blues first team, and Gelhardt could be the next in line to do just that if he signed along the dotted line at Stamford Bridge.
