Premier League giants Chelsea and Manchester City are looking to take advantage of the turmoil Charlton Athletic are in by bidding for young prodigy Ademola Lookman, reports The Independent

Ademola Lookman

The Addicks are in free fall sitting one from bottom in the Championship table and three points from safety after a 5-0 hammering by Huddersfield Town on Tuesday night.

The defeat saw owner Roland Duchâtelet dispose of interim manager Karel Fraeye the following day with the Belgian set to appoint Ujpest manager Nebojsa Vignjevic - only to do a U-turn in fear of a backlash from Charlton fans.

He has instead reappointed Jose Riga, who had a three month spell in charge of manager of the South London club at the end of the 2013/14 season and kept them in the Championship.

Premier League clubs are hoping to exploit the upset at The Valley by poaching 18-year-old striker Ademola Lookman away from them. Chelsea and Manchester City lead the race while Everton and Tottenham Hotspur have also been following the progress of Lookman, who is rated as one of the best prospects in the Championship.

Charlton do not want to let the striker leave but they have to reluctantly let him go if a suitable offer comes in with the club staring at the prospect of League One football next season.

Lookman didn't feature in the defeat to Huddersfield but is the Addicks's top scorer with three goals from seven starts.

The defeat to Huddersfield leaves Charlton without a win since 21 November and taken just four points from their last nine fixtures. They face a tough trip to promotion-chasing Hull City this weekend.
