Wigan have approached Chelsea over the availability of Dujon Sterling, according to Sky Sports News [Transfer Centre 30/7, 11:35 a.m].

The two clubs are in talks over a possible loan deal, and after the success Reece James had at Wigan last season when he arrived from Chelsea, the Blues could be eager to work with Wigan again.

It had previously been reported that Sterling was closing in on a move to QPR, but that deal has gone quiet so could be off the table, allowing the Latics to move in.

Sterling did well at Coventry last season and he quickly became a first-team regular. His pace proved difficult for defences to cope with and Wigan will need that threat from deep in order to progress on last season's lower-half finish.

Nathan Byrne is currently the only right-back in Paul Cook's squad so it is certainly an area which requires strengthening, and Sterling is likely to be a key feature of the side if he joins.

The Verdict

This is another smart move from Wigan and they will be hoping he can match the performances of James, who became a fan favourite last season and made huge improvements in his game.

Sterling got five assists last year but was keen to join the attack whenever possible. That should help Wigan to carry more of a threat going forward and make them more likely to retain possession, which is one area they need to improve on from the last campaign.

The Chelsea player still has a lot to learn but he is constantly improving and exposure to a good division and a good manager in Cook should make him an accomplished performer for The Latics if he signs.
