Chelsea midfielder edging closer to switch away as Lampard’s Derby close in

Chelsea star Mason Mount is likely to sign a new deal with the Stamford Bridge club this week, before a move to Frank Lampard’s Derby County is sanctioned.

Football Insider reports that the talented 19-year old is set to join former Blues midfielder Lampard as he begins his managerial career at pride park, hot on the heels of a super season with Vitesse Arnhem in the Netherlands.

Mount scored 13 times for Vitesse, adding ten assists in a confident season in the Eredivisie. He also trained with the senior England squad earlier this summer prior to their departure to Russia for the World Cup.

Mount’s new deal comes at a time when he still has three years to run on his current contract at Chelsea, but the Blues are keen to reward his continued development and secure his long-term future.

The Portsmouth-born midfielder has represented his country from U16 to U19 level and is now set to get his first season of senior football in England.

The Verdict

This could be a big season for Mount, he’s clearly a talented player and throwing some Championship experience into that can only accentuate his development.

Derby could be getting one of the stars of next season if they get this tied up, but the report suggests a host of second-tier clubs are interested. Why wouldn’t they be?
