According to the Sunderland Echo, Chelsea’s Eddie Newton is keen on the vacant managerial role at Sunderland.
Newton is Chelsea’s loan technical coach, and has been responsible for the likes of Izzy Brown, Tammy Abraham and Kasey Palmer all sealing temporary moves into the Sky Bet Championship in the last 12-months.
The 45-year old is interested in succeeding David Moyes, who left the Stadium of Light last month following relegation from the Premier League, despite never managing a Football League side in his career.
Newton has gained experience as an assistant throughout his career, and was part of Roberto Di Matteo’s staff at West Bromwich Albion, helping the Baggies to promotion from the Championship in 2010.
Di Matteo took Newton to Chelsea with him, where he was part of the backroom staff that helped the Blues win the Champions League and FA Cup in 2012.
Former Manchester United player, Ryan Giggs, has been linked with the Sunderland vacancy, along with Derek McInnes, Paul Lambert and Paul Heckingbottom.
Sunderland are preparing for the upcoming Championship campaign, and have not competed in the second-tier since 2007.
