Frank Lampard is looking to move to the front of the queue in the race to sign Wigan Athletic youngster, Joe Gelhardt.

According to a report from the Express, the Blues boss is hoping to move ahead of Everton and sign the 17-year-old Latics star, who has caught the eye this season with a number of excellent performances.

Lampard, who has given a chance to the youth in the Chelsea squad this season as the likes of Mason Mount and Tammy Abraham have made big impressions, is now keen on adding another young player to his set-up at Stamford Bridge it seems.

Gelhardt has already opened his account for the season with a goal against Hull City after hitting double figures for the England under-17 team last season.

Chelsea's move for Geldhart would be a blow to other clubs who are interested in the youngster, with Everton being one of the main clubs credited with showing an interest in the teenager.

While it's unlikely that the Wigan man would be given a chance in the Premier League in the immediate future, it's clear to see that Lampard is wanting to change the ethos at Stamford Bridge and usher in a new era of youth for the London outfit.

The Verdict

This isn't a surprise and puts a spanner in the works to Everton's hopes of landing the youngster.

The problem for Gelhardt really will be who he goes too and who he thinks he has a brighter future with.

If Lampard remains at Chelsea, there's every chance Gelhardt might be able to progress his Premier League career fairly quickly.
