The Latics secured an instant return to the Championship last season, with Cook guiding his side to the League One title.

Cook’s main aim heading into the new season will be establishing Wigan back in the Championship, which will be difficult in an extremely competitive division.

First up for Wigan is Sheffield Wednesday, who last season struggled in the Championship, eventually finishing mid-table under Jos Luhukay.

Despite a lowly position last season, the Owls will give Wigan a firm test on their Championship return, with Cook sure to learn a lot about his squad on Saturday afternoon.

The Latics have a couple of injuries to contend with, which will frustrate Cook.

With that in mind, we take a look at Wigan’s squad, selecting the starting XI we believe Cook should be fielding…

Walton is back at Wigan and will expect to be first choice for the coming season.

James looks like he could be an impressive addition at Wigan.

The Chelsea loanee should deputise for Nathan Byrne.

Dunkley was a regular last season and Cook will be hoping the 26-year-old can take the step up into the Championship.

Injuries could hand Bruce a place in the starting XI.

If that’s the case, his experience will be key against Wednesday.

Robinson's arrival has solved a problem position, Cook could be tempted to throw him straight in tomorrow.

Morsy was so influential last season under Cook. He simply has to start.

Power has played a lot of football for a 25-year-old, and this season, we will find out just how far the midfielder has come.

He will be key alongside Morsy.

McManaman has a point to prove on his return to Wigan, with the winger looking to get his career back on track.

He could be Saturday’s talking point.

Powell is Wigan’s key man.

If he is on the top of his game, Wigan will give a few teams a shock this season.

Jacobs got 12 goals last season and he will be looking to hit the ground running against Sheffield Wednesday.

Vaughan looks set for another chance in the Championship under Cook.

Wigan will need him to lead the line with purpose this Saturday.
